We’ve known for a while that Sherlock Holmes would not return for the third series, but now we’re getting a good look at how it will play out.
The BBC has been teasing Sherlock fans for years with a series of teasers that have teased the upcoming third series.
The most recent teaser from Sherlock was just last week, and it teased an early episode, with Watson (Martin Freeman) being “taken by the ghosts of a dead relative.”
The new teasers have confirmed that Watson and Moriarty will be playing a key role in the upcoming season, and the showrunners have shared some new details.
According to the new teaser, Sherlock’s adventures are about to take a turn for the dramatic, as Moriarty “takes on a new persona and the role of the ghost.”
This new incarnation of the Sherlock Holmes will play a “central role” in the show, with Sherlock being “a master manipulator who’s able to influence and manipulate everyone around him.”
We’re not sure how much the new incarnation will change Sherlock’s relationship with the dead relative, but fans can expect him to be a different kind of Sherlock, with him dealing with the grief of his wife and children as well as the death of his own mother.
Sherlock will also be dealing with his own personal demons and “emotions” as he deals with “the burden of responsibility of being a family man,” according to the teaser.
What does this mean for the season?
Sherlock fans should be looking forward to the return of the “mad scientist” as well, as we know he’ll be back for the next season.
But as we’ve seen from the teaser, fans should also expect the show to move away from the Sherlockian detective story, with a focus on more “mysterious and sinister” mysteries.
While we don’t know much about the upcoming episodes, we know the showrunner has stated that there will be a lot of “mystery and intrigue” to the show.
We’ve also learned that Watson’s “dark secret” will be revealed, which is a big departure from the way the series has gone before.
